Do tattoo removal creams work?

Removal creams can be harmful, here’s why...

Do tattoo removal creams work?

The short answer is “no.” A tattoo removal cream will not remove your tattoo.

The long answer is that they don’t work and will cost you more harm and money in the long run.

Here’s why.

What are they?

Tattoo removal creams are over the counter products. They are a topical cream that claims to remove or lighten a tattoo. They claim to do this through bleaching the skin or by peeling away the top layer of skin so that the tattoo pigment can be released.

Why they don’t work

There are two main reasons why a topical cream won’t remove your tattoo.

1 - When you get a tattoo, pigment is injected into the dermis, which is the deeper layer of your skin. The dermis lies under the surface layer of your skin, which is called the epidermis.

Removal creams target the epidermis, or the surface layer of the skin. They are not able to penetrate to the deeper level of the skin where the tattoo pigment lies.

This is important: even if removal creams work as advertised, they can’t remove pigment in the main layer of the tattoo.

2 - It’s impossible to apply a topical cream by hand with precision.

Again, even if the removal creams worked as advertised, you would end up lightening areas of skin surrounding the tattoo, which you don’t want.

Why removal creams are dangerous

Most removal creams contain an acid as an agent which burns away or peels the upper layer of your skin. This is often something called trichloroacetic acid or glycolic acid.

Acids like these can be dangerous to the skin, especially if they’re not administered by a medical professional or are used in high concentrations (which are often present in removal creams).

The bottom line: the acids in removal creams can damage your skin. These acids can cause anything from a rash to burns or even permanent scarring to your skin.

More trouble in the long run

Let’s be honest, tattoo removal is not cheap, so it makes sense that people would search for a cheaper, faster alternative. But the problem is you can end up doing harm and costing yourself more in the long run.

When it comes to your skin, you want to do things right.

Think about an item you own that’s the most important to you. Whether it’s your car or your home or even a brand new phone. When you have something of worth, then you do your best to care for it.

When I’ve spent a chunk of money on a new phone, I don’t leave the store without a screen protector and a case that will protect it. And I don’t try to skimp on those things either because I want to actually protect my phone. Not just something cheap that won’t do anything.

If that’s true of a phone or a car, then it’s even more true for your skin. When it comes to something as important as your skin, only use what works.
