What is tattoo blowout?

Tattoo blowout happens when ink from a tattoo bleeds out into surrounding areas of skin. Blowout makes your tattoo look blurry and smudged.

It’s frustrating, for obvious reasons.

What causes it?

The main cause is the tattoo artist, unfortunately.

Tattoo blowout happens when the artist presses the needle too deeply into the skin, which causes ink to be injected deeper, below the surface level of the skin.

Blowout is also more common in areas with thin skin, such as the wrist. Because your body’s skin is thinner in certain areas, it’s easier for the needle to accidentally penetrate too deep.

Blowout vs. healing

The healing process after a fresh tattoo can resemble blowout. If your tattoo looks blurry right after you got it, it could just be the skin healing. Don’t worry about it until after you’ve given the healing process plenty of time.

Bottom line: don’t worry about blowout until after the normal healing process.

If it still looks blurry or smudged after the skin has healed, then it could be blowout.

Is it predictable?

Sadly, no. You can’t predict if blowout will happen until after the tattoo is finished.

Is there anything I can do?

There are a few things that you can do to prevent it. Limit movement in the area where you received a tattoo in the first few days, if possible. This can help prevent blowout, especially in a thin-skinned area, like the wrist. But this can be hard to do, for obvious reasons.

However, the tattoo artist and the application process is the main cause of blowout. That means there isn’t much that you can do to prevent it, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything you can’t do about it.
